How to Store Dried Fruit and Nuts to Keep Them Fresh Longer

  • Jul 18, 2026

Getting the most out of your dried fruit and nuts comes down to how you store them. A few simple habits can keep them fresher for longer and prevent that stale, chewy texture nobody wants.

Keep Them Airtight
Once opened, transfer your dried fruit and nuts into an airtight container or reseal the bag tightly, pushing out as much air as possible. Exposure to air is the main reason nuts turn stale and dried fruit hardens.

Store Somewhere Cool and Dark
Heat and light speed up the natural oils in nuts going rancid. A cupboard or pantry away from direct sunlight and the oven is ideal for everyday use.

Consider the Fridge or Freezer for Longer Storage
If you've bought in bulk or won't get through a bag quickly, nuts in particular keep well in the fridge or freezer, which slows down the natural process that causes them to turn rancid. Dried fruit can also be frozen, though it's best kept in an airtight bag to avoid picking up freezer odours.

Watch for Moisture
Dried fruit is prone to absorbing moisture from the air, which can lead to mould over time. Always reseal the bag properly and check occasionally for any change in texture or smell.
