Medjool Dates vs Regular Dates: What's the Difference?

  • Jul 18, 2026

Not all dates are the same. If you've ever compared a Medjool date to the smaller, drier dates sold in supermarket snack packs, you'll have noticed a real difference — here's what sets them apart.

Size and Texture
Medjool dates are notably larger and plumper than most regular date varieties (such as Deglet Nour), with a soft, almost caramel-like texture. Regular dates tend to be smaller, chewier and firmer.

Flavour
Medjool dates have a rich, deep sweetness often compared to caramel or toffee. Regular dates are sweet too, but with a milder, more straightforward flavour.

How They're Used
Because of their soft texture and bold flavour, Medjool dates are popular eaten on their own as a snack, stuffed with nuts, or used whole in baking. Regular dates are more commonly chopped and used as an ingredient — in flapjacks, energy balls or baking — where their firmer texture holds up well.

Nutritionally Similar, Different Experience
Both types are naturally sweet dried fruit with a similar nutritional profile per gram, rich in natural sugars and providing dietary fibre. The main difference is really about size, texture and how you plan to use them.

Try Them for Yourself
Our Large Medjool Dates are sourced from Palestine and selected for size and quality — a good way to taste the difference.
